Basically, past level 250 every 50 levels girl needs gems to be upgraded. Upside of this rework is that girls can be upgraded above your player level. Downside is that getting gems is rather grindy and they have no other use. Also there are level tiers you'll need to unlock on you account by upgrading certain amounts of girls before you can upgrade further.
