How will this first week of contest work? Does it start on Wednesday or will there be backdated tracking? Really welcomed change, looking forward to some more competitive edge and rewards to the game

Using 5400 Kobans to get potentially 72 more kobans and at best an epic/rare equipment or affection item sounds inherently wasteful to me. You would be much better off winning the contest with cash only. And I don't see why the devs would want to encourage players to use kobans to win contests.
