It works like a pachinko (or a gacha), as in the Japanese physical slot machines that are all over the place throughout the country, but match all the right loopholes to not count as gambling by Japanese law. You throw a coin away and then you get a Kinder Surprise like plastic globe (or, dare I say, an orb? ^^ wink wink) and then you open it to find out if you've won money, something super valuable, a garbage toy or a super cheap piece of plastic. Hint: it's always a cheap piece of plastic. But yeah, those names, not unlike kobans and then ryos for HCL back in the day were all just lifted as is from real-world Japanese culture. What we have in this game (and in most free to play games) are "gachapon", that is : You put your currency in the machine (coins in real life, orbs or kobans in HH) and in return, you get a random item from the machine's item pool. It's usually aimed at kids (and collectors) with little collections of toys, but you can also find Gacha machines in Japan with "adult" goods (porn DVD's, sex toys...) Pachinko has nothing to do with that. Pachinkos are machines in which you put little metal balls that roll down the game, hitting little metal pins that change their trajectory and make them fall down in one hole or another. And depending on where they fall, you may get more little balls to play longer and/or to exchange for items. Pachinko kinda reminds me of those games that we often see at the funfair around here, those games with "fake coins pushing fake coins to hopefully make more fake coins drop" (not easy to describe, but I guess anyone who's seen those games before will understand what I'm talking about 😛 ).
